Anchoring Leadership: Practical Steps to Develop Attention Skills - Dr Elizabeth King

In our dynamic world, filled with distractions and constant change, the capacity to regulate attention is fundamental to effective leadership. Below, we outline the practical steps for developing strong attention skills, focusing on breathing as a foundational practice. By incorporating these techniques into our leadership approach, we enhance focus, reduce stress, and foster a mindful culture within our organisation.

Using the Breath as an Anchor

Breathing techniques are powerful tools for enhancing presence and awareness. Here’s how you can start:

  1. Find a Quiet Space:
Choose a peaceful area where you won’t be disturbed. A quiet office or a secluded spot is ideal. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, feet on the ground, and hands on your thighs.
  2. Settle into a Relaxed Posture:
Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze downward. Begin with a few deep breaths to relax your body and mind, inhaling deeply through your nose, holding briefly, and exhaling slowly through your mouth.
  3. Notice Your Breath:
Pay attention to the natural rhythm of your breath. Feel the air entering your nostrils, the rise and fall of your chest, or the expansion and contraction of your abdomen.
  4. Redirect Your Attention:
If your mind wanders, gently guide your focus back to your breath without judgement.  This practice of returning to the breath is a core aspect of mindfulness and the key to learning to regulate our attention.

Attention skills enable leaders to focus amongst chaos, make conscious decisions, and navigate uncertainty.  Strengthening attention skills increases capacity for choice and impacts results.

For a deeper exploration of how these practices integrate into broader leadership development, our paper provides comprehensive insights into four forms of mindfulness that enhance leadership in uncertain times.
